November Omnium-Gatherum

November was full of long work days for me.  I was trying to push myself in the first weeks so that I could have a week off at the end to rest and work on recipes, clean house, rest, enjoy Thanksgiving, more rest.  And since I work outside and travel around 4 states all month long, the winter months are always full of a little stress about what the weather will bring us.  The view yesterday from the top of Union Station watching the sun rise over the Capital was a wonderful end to a long month of travel.

(Much more calming for me to look at than what’s been going on inside the Capital dome these days.)

Well I am done with my month’s work.   And I am resting.

But it’s impossible to work on recipes when I can’t smell or taste what I’m fixing 🙁   My first winter cold………………..

So glad that I didn’t have to get up at 4:30

this morning

but it would REALLY

have been nice to have been asleep

instead of trying to breathe.

My eyes have been watering so much

I can’t believe they are still so

puffy?   And I’ll be glad when my food

doesn’t all taste the same…………..kind of cough droppy………kind of blahhhh!

I did have a bright moment around 1 am this morning, trying to sleep, trying to breathe.

I discovered one of my favorite food bloggers, Starr at The Misfit Baker, was kind enough to notice my site with a

“Very Inspiring Blogger” Award!  🙂

Thanks so much for thinking of me and sharing so many of your own fun recipes each week Starr!

Be sure to check out her site.  Starr has a whole section dedicated to Christmas with

some wonderfully unique treats, like ‘Chocolate Eggnog Fudge’:

Check it out!

And I had fun yesterday unwrapping my latest antique finds as well.

A lovely old Wedgwood Plate and 2 serving spoons made in 1847!  Just $9 for both!

Can you imagine how many wonderful meals these spoons scooped up in the last 160 years?  How many hands gripped the handles, smelling some wonderful homemade dishes, their stomachs growling in anticipation of how good each bite will taste?

Or how on earth this fragile porcelain never once hit a hard edge and broke into pieces in 100 years of use?  I’m certain that the man who made this lovely piece all those years ago was probably under paid, under fed and never dreamed of such a thing as a cell phone camera capturing the intricacies of the pattern in the plate.  Or the stories that would be told across the tables it would be served at.

On to more important topics:  The end of Hostess this month   🙁

Founded in 1930 and based in Irving, Texas, Hostess Brands’ products have included iconic brands such as Hostess®, Wonder®, Nature’s Pride®, Dolly Madison®, Drake’s®, Butternut®, Home Pride® and Merita®. Hostess Brands has approximately 18,500 employees and operates 33 bakeries, 553 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 527 bakery outlet stores throughout the United States.

Hostess definitely does not make Healthy Fun Food, but can you imagine so many jobs being lost at the greed of such a few?

I’m determined to make a healthy version of Ho Hos now.  Until then, there are lots of great versions already around

like Homemade Twinkies or my favorite Chocolate Cupcake remake.

Finally, a nice little ‘words to live’ by quote that I found at a new favorite site: http://www.veggie-wedgie.com/

Hope you all have a great weekend, don’t get sick, and have a great time in the kitchen!

Oh, and if you didn’t win the Powerball last night, there are MUCH better odds for 4 of you to win this:

NuNatural’s Chocolate and Peppermint Liquid Stevia Giveaway.  Contest ends November 30th at midnight.

Thanks everyone!  Time for a nap….

Ho Hos soon. Worst part for us is we paid my husband’s friend every time he watches Floydy for us in boxes of Twinkies and Ho Ho, ARGG! That’s what prompted me to snatch up these as soon as the announcement came about the bankruptcy. No easy payment now 🙁 But for sure glad it wasn’t my job lost ! Thanks for your kind comments as always…
