Gena Hamshaw’s new book – “Choosing Raw: Making Raw Foods Part of the Way You Eat”

Gena Hamshaw’s new book – “Choosing Raw: Making Raw Foods Part of the Way You Eat”

“I’m 100 % Vegan and I’m as Raw as I need and want to be”  –  Gena Let me say just one thing to start off my tale of just how creative and delicious Gena’s new book is and how happy I am for the opportunity to offer 1 copy to a reader in a giveaway. This book is a joy to read.  And I don’t normally read cookbooks. It’s going with me next month to Alaska.  May have to sneak it there.  But – it’s going!  No, I definitely won’t be cooking on my trip but I’ll be reading and learning from a great resource, one of the best in my mind, on how to eat the best food for your body and still enjoy it. I’m a long time reader of Choosing Raw.  I’ve used Gena’s recipes and fallen in love with her writing and her ways.  She talks to people, not at them, about life, food and how problems can be solved in our diets.   She’s a truly gifted communicator and beyond that even……….she is smart as heck!  You may or may not have your hands on a copy of Choosing Raw:  making raw foods part…

Food Bloggers Against Hunger – The Vegan “Value Meal”

Food Bloggers Against Hunger – The Vegan “Value Meal”

Mc Donald’s Quarter Pounder has 750 Calories, 380 of those from fat, 19 grams saturated. Add a large fry and that’s another 500 calories and another 25 grams of fat…..convenience and low cost meals have a high price to pay for families on a budget.  My Vegan ‘Value Meal’ was ready in 15 minutes and came in at just under $4 in ingredients. It’s spicy Chipotle and corn flavors make a burger better than any fast food I’ve tasted and provide great fiber and nutrients without a lot of clean up.   With just 3 grams of fat, no saturated, and 5 grams of fiber per burger, it’s a healthy alternative. They taste just as luscious, messy and juicy as it’s fast food rivals.  Fried up in the same pan that I did the potatoes in, it took just 5 minutes to cook through. The 2 store-bought Black Bean Burgers came 4 to a pack for $2 and will keep in the freezer for months.   The fries came from a huge 5 lbs bag that I got from Sam’s Club for just $3.99.  I used a little olive oil drizzled over the fries and sprinkled them with a  homemade…

December 2012 Omnium-Gatherum

Our first icy snow of the season today.   So glad I’m home enjoying the view from a warm cozy spot                                                                                                                                         and don’t have to work 🙂 Winter weather around Washington D.C. is usually beautiful, and always a nightmare to get around town in. Here’s what my view out the windshield looked like this morning as my husband was scraping the ice off. Ahhh, I so love D.C. in the winter………… So let’s look forward to the spring and all the wonderful fresh foods that will be in the stores when it gets warmer.  Right now I feel like hibernating until the thaw. My first priority of the new year is to reduce my sugars to be completely unrefined. Sprouting & Anti – Inflammatory Charts

I wanted to share 2 charts I came across in the last week that are really helpful summaries of healthful eating.  The first one deals with Anti-Inflammatory Dieting. Courtesy of Dr. Weil, this chart really defines how we should choose our food. http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02012/anti-inflammatory-diet I’ve used this diet guideline for the past 2 years and it REALLY does help with joint pain. Last week I recommitted myself to sticking with this food parameter again as part of my Getting Back On Track efforts this month. I’m using Vega smoothies daily for the next few months to take off 20 lbs. They work perfectly with Anti Inflammatory Dieting. The second chart is goes hand in hand with Dr. Weil’s Diet guidelines. SPOUTING!! I fell in love with spouting foods last spring and this chart is wonderful at organizing techniques and general information. When I saw it on Anna’s Facebook page, I knew I had to save it for a reference. Do any of you sprout your food? Any good ideas for keeping the sprouts fresh longer, or what your favorite tastes are? Great references here.  Thanks Anna, thanks Dr. Weil!

Getting Back On Track

I’m determined to get my health back on track starting today. Starting with getting back to a healthy diet. It’s been almost 2 years since I discovered that dairy, and a lot of wheat and sugar, make my joints ache, my stomach unsettled, and very fatigued. Read more here: http://cannedtime.blogspot.com/p/why-go-dairy-free.html Since that discovery, my life turned into a quest for more information on nutrition. I went through several phases in that first year of eliminating more and more foods. The more I read, the less I wanted to eat until I was finally down 75 Lbs. For the first time as an adult, I was wearing a size 4 pants, size small shirts! Unbelievable after being heavy since my early teens………… And my pain was gone! 2 years ago, I stopped dairy, stopped sugar, white flour, lots of bad fat, most wheat, and on and on. I was growing wheatgrass, sprouting, eating flax seed daily, taking a probiotic 3 times a day. Get the picture? I was healthier than I’ve ever been. Today is my crossroads…time to get back on the right track.  I started this blog because I became really obsessed with letting people know that they could eat…
