Fried Leek Dumplings with Red Pepper Sauce

Fried Leek Dumplings with Red Pepper Sauce

This summer, we learned how to roll up our own sushi. And now, we’ve tackled fried dumplings and they great! I love making up my own filling and getting the bottoms browned just the way i like.  These take about an hour from start to finish and are well worth it.  Hopefully you can find dumpling wrappers in your local store.  We’re spoiled in D.C. with health food and international markets all over the place but most groceries should have some size and shape that would work for you.  We were even able to find a ‘no gluten added’ wrap. I used sliced leeks are the base for my filling. Along with the veggies, I threw in a little red pepper sauce for flavor.  You’ll just use a small amount but it adds a wonderful creaminess to the dumplings with each bite.  For the red pepper sauce: blend together until smooth, in a food processor, 1 red bell pepper, 8 oz of silken tofu, splash of hot sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder. For the filling: 2 small or 1 large leek, sliced and chopped 1 cup of Napa cabbage sliced thin 1 cup shredded carrot 1/8 cup chopped fresh ginger…

Rosemary Grape Jam

Rosemary Grape Jam

1 year ago – Jalapeño Salt   I’ve made a many, many fruit jams over the years.  This one is a little bit special. It is the first ‘grape’ jam I’ve ever made.  Cooked up out of an abundance of fresh grapes we got last week and a few hours of boredom last weekend.  This jam is just delicious.  It has a fancy background taste with the rosemary but is simply perfect with your basic PB & J. Fresh grapes, a little sugar and water.  Simmer for 30 minutes and drop in a few sprigs of rosemary. It took just 30 minutes on the stove top and another 30 to cool off.  Thinned down with a little maple syrup, it would be a wonderful warm syrup for pancakes or waffles.  The grape skins keep it on the thick side so it works well warmed or chilled. The touch of rosemary gives this jam the slightest accent of herbs.   If you don’t say what’s in it, your guests will most likely not be able to know why the grapes seem a little more adult than a jar of Welch’s Print Rosemary Concord Grape Jam Author: Angela @ Canned-Time.com Recipe type: Condiment Prep time: …

Spiced Wild Orange Sugar Body Scrub

Spiced Wild Orange Sugar Body Scrub

I recently purchased some yummy ‘wild orange’ essential oils and thought it would make a great scent for some homemade sugar scrub Sugar body scrubs are inexpensive when you make them yourself and do wonders for exfoliating dry winter skin. They mix up in minutes.  And make a great gift as well. The wild orange essential oil I used was perfectly sweet and really lingers after using the scrub, YUM! Spiced Wild Orange Sugar Body Scrub Combine equal parts Sugar (Brown or Raw) and Olive Oil, Grapeseed or Almond Oil.  I made up 2 cups worth for this batch. Add in about a tsp. of Cinnamon for spice. Add in 20 drops of Orange Oil for each 2 cups of scrub, more for stronger scent. Stir together ingredients and store in a sealed container, preferably glass. Stir as needed.  Apply a small amount to skin with wet hands and scrub gently to remove dead skin. Rinse and pat dry.  May be used 2 – 3 times per week safely. Don’t have any brown sugar? Here’s a wonderful way to make some homemade Brown Sugar and always have fresh on hand at home: If you’d like to try out the ‘wild…
