Don’t Forget Your Greens!!

Don’t Forget Your Greens!!

With all of the sweet stuff around this time of year…… don’t forget to grow some greens!!   I’ve been messing around with growing sprouts and microgreens for years.   They are fun to watch grow.   Grow up in just days.   They’re especially easy and inexpensive.   And they just do a body good.   Add them to salads, on top of soups, in wraps, or do like I’ve been doing this Holiday season:   Juicing them!             Seems kind of sad when I stuff my juicer full of these little beauties but it’s the fastest way to keep up with fresh veggies all day long.     Juice up some sprouts and mix with a little fresh fruit juice and you’ve made a healthy and delicious drink to sip each morning instead of the usual sweet stimulant.         If you’ve never tried to grow sprouts yourself, you’ve probably avoided using them with any regularity.  They are particularly pricey in stores due to the problem of keeping them fresh for sale. Grow your own in just a few days, with just a little effort and you can splurge on as many…

Adding Powdered Greens to your diet, deliciously + a Giveaway!

Adding Powdered Greens to your diet, deliciously + a Giveaway!

I want to share some thoughts today on Vegan “Dieting” and healthy weight loss.   I’m absolutely NOT a ‘green smoothie’ gal – can’t stand the taste so I stopped trying to like them years ago.  But green powders, full of tons of nutrients like ‘Organic Spirulina’ Chlorella, Wheat Grass, Barley’ – that I can do everyday to add healthy, non-fat greens to my diet.  I’ve been hiding Oriya Organics green powders in my foods for over a year now and can really attest to the increased energy they can give an already healthy, plant based diet. The wonderful folks at Oriya want to share some goodies with one lucky reader now this week.  Don’t forget to enter to win a full size of their ‘Supergreen Medley’ a full size ‘Superfood Protein Medley‘ and a cool mixing cup – all up for grabs at the end of the post here. First a little background on me: I’m one of those Vegans who didn’t exactly lose weight when I stopped eating meat and animal products 3 years ago. When I stopped eating dairy products 5 years ago, I basically lived on meat and veggies for two years.  That brought me a…

Fresh Fruit Fast is on!

Fresh Fruit Fast is on!

So, we’re off to Alaska in August and I have just a few winter comfort meals left on my hips right now.  I’ve started a fresh fruit and vegetable fast of sorts in the past weeks to get myself into tip top shape for our trip at the end of the summer.  This winter’s sub-zero temperatures were anything but comfortable working outside.  And now I’m paying the price of warming my belly with hot baked goods to keep out the cold.   I’ve already dropped 20 but I’d love to fit into some summer favorites for the trip.  Another 15 to go I’m afraid.   My ‘Raw Foods’ mentors:  Gena, Julie and Kristina have all got me convinced that fresh foods are the way to go for maximum nutrition while dropping this extra weight.  I’ve always known the fresh, local produce tastes the best.  But for now, it’s helping to trim down the fat as well as giving me full flavored meals.   I try not to eat much after 2pm.  A salad or bowl of soup is enough to fill me up before bed.  And all the fiber from fresh fruits and veggies is actually making me feel more…

A. B. C. Smoothie Antioxidant Blast in a glass + my “virtual” friend Annie

A. B. C. Smoothie Antioxidant Blast in a glass + my “virtual” friend Annie

Vitamin A + Beta Carotene + Vitamin C = My A. B. C. Smoothie “Antioxidant Blast in a glass” I first saw this drink on Pinterest so I’m not pretending to be so clever as to have created this magnificent tribute to antioxidants and vitamins, but here it is for you now: 2 Carrots (roasted or steamed) + 1 medium size Sweet Potato (cooked) + 1/3 of a fresh Pineapple + 1 inch of fresh Ginger Chill + Blend + Drink = Power Surge! This kind of easy, fantastically healthy and delicious recipe is a great example of small changes I’ve made to my diet in the past 4 years.  Before eliminating  all dairy, and then all animal products in my diet, it was really just ‘what can I eat so I can continue to go’ and ‘how can I stay as thin as possible’  Today things have changed dramatically for me and my diet.  Living a Vegan Plant based lifestyle is such a great confidence builder for me.  I think more kindly about the world and I treat my body more kindly.  I don’t crave Bacon.  I don’t crave fat filled creamy shakes.  I do crave the energy boost and…

Lime and Sprouted Lentil Detox Soup with Raw Onion & Corn Bread

Lime and Sprouted Lentil Detox Soup with Raw Onion & Corn Bread

Winter always reminds me just how tough some days are for our bodies, and souls for that matter, to keep up with the harsh elements they’re exposed to each day.  Here in Washington D. C., we’ve had record low temperatures, overly dry inside air, cold damp outside air to tend with.  It’s rough for our bodies as well as our spirits to keep up with the elements some days and a bowl of warm, healthy soup can always heal and protect.  In the Lime Lentil soup, I have a great way to cleanse myself of toxins, if only for a little while, and help restore my good nature inside and out.
